The Stockman’s Sign

This sign is a representative of the type of sign formerly found all along Main Street.  After the closing of the Stockman’s, the sign vanished for a time. Thanks to the efforts of Roy Dantzman, it was recovered and restored. This piece of Montrose history is now on a thirty-year loan to MCHM by an anonymous local history buff.

Chris Quintana bought the Stockman’s, located at 320 E. Main Street, in 1967. This popular establishment was well- known for its good food and, particularly for its Mexican specialties.  The Stockman’s was popular with John Wayne and the crew from the movie, True Grit, which was filmed in the area. Many restaurants have found a home in this historic building with Colorado Boy Pizza being the current occupant.

The Stockman’s bar and back bar came from a saloon of the 1800s in Telluride. Later the wooden bar top was decorated with the names of visiting celebrities and paintings which were burned into the wood. This very interesting bar top can be viewed inside the museum.
